Harmony
The two works Sunrise Sunset and Harmony were created exclusively for Edition VFO (Verein für Originalgraphik) in Zurich. The first work, Sunrise Sunset, reflects Marx’s practice of conveying moods with his artworks and evoking a certain feeling in the viewer that he himself felt when creating the work. Sunrise Sunset alludes to the rhythm of life, to the cycles of beginning and end, as a continuously recurring process. However, it is also intended to convey the feeling of traveling, wandering through different time zones and experiencing jet lag. The second work, Harmony, shows Stefan Marx’s philosophical approach. He often speaks of his work as an approach to communicating complex, abstract themes in an accessible and visual way. Harmony is therefore not just about aesthetic balance, but rather about the pursuit of a balance that also relates to the various tensions and contradictions in life. For the lithographs he created for Edition VFO, he worked closely with Zurich printmaker Thomi Wolfensberger, a master of lithography.
Stefan Marx lends his unique handwriting to a variety of materials: paper – torn-out pages from magazines or new sheets from his sketchbook – canvas, porcelain and textiles. Across all media, his work is distinguished by his signature style. His drawings chronicle everyday life. They are direct and personal, often comic and good-humoured. Marx observes his environment and sketches out scenarios that provide an insight into the zeitgeist and modern society. While his drawings are monochromatic, they sometimes play with colour, depending on the paper being used. In a series of more abstract works, Stefan Marx uses colour directly. Aside from his figurative and abstract works, Marx also works with text inspired by song lyrics. The often black and white words have a strong visual and emotional effect. While adding the text to his canvases, Marx visually translates their poetic message.
