"While searching for a home in southwest France, I discovered the cantou. A cantou is a stone-built open fireplace that takes up an entire wall of an old stone house. Each one is marked by a monumental black inverted trapezoid on the back wall, derived naturally with soot build-up and often intentionally painted over the build-up with defined edges. As I clicked through several thousand house listings online over the last three years and continue to do so, I screen capture photos of cantous with their black markings into a desktop folder named home." Jin Angdoo

Jin Angdoo is a Korean-American artist based in France. She studied Design/Media Arts at UCLA and developed her early work in video during a two-year residency at Fabrica in Italy. After a period in Amsterdam directing commercials, her interest shifted toward painting through encounters with artists of the Moderne Jazz graffiti crew. Her current work focuses on compositing reduced, distilled floral forms over landscape underpaintings on large canvases. Alongside painting, she explores in textiles and ceramics to extend the forms and gestures found in her paintings. Her paintings are represented by Saatchi Yates Gallery.
